You may have noticed the dramatic increase in Doddling time…easily explained…noticed Frosty Treat Dairy Bar just as I arrived in Kensington which was written up as a must stop…so I stopped and had lunch

THIS IS THE PICTURE I WAS SURE I HAD TAKEN OF MY CLAM STRIPS 😂

As I was finishing I received a message from Bryson Guptill who was at Willow Bakery and Cafe just down the street so off I went to meet him.

An interesting fellow…in 2019 he had an idea… create a walk around PEI. He sat down and mapped out a route and then his partner and two other people just started walking.  No reservations…the idea caught the public’s interest quickly…CBC interviewed him several times and the group started getting accommodation offers from folks on the island. In total he thinks they paid  for accommodation a handful of times only!

Then the fun really started with Tourism PEI getting involved…fighting to get Island Walk signs up (at first the answer was no) etc. The Island Walk now has a separate governing board…funding from various government sources. They have come a long way considering COVID years however now the shortcomings ie lack of accommodations…lack of biffies…short tourist season for many operators etc are emerging.

It will be very interesting to see where this all goes in the next 5 years. As it is The Island Walk is simply too expensive for many due to lack of accommodation options.

Overall today was as quiet a walking day as I can remember. People were out walking, cycling or ebiking the Confederation Trail but other than that no incidents of any kind. 😂

First breakfast from yesterdays little shopping trip…an “interesting” combination 🤔

I never did manage to open cheese 😪

Started on Confederation Trail at 7:00am…bright sunshine…high of 19c. Pretty soon I was down to a t-shirt and in Summerside where I took my first of many breaks 🤔 Ron told me that chocolate milk is a favourite “fuel up” for long distance backpackers…come to think of it I seem to recall chocolate milk was always available at the end of the Manitoba Marathon…must be all the added sugar…along with yogurt 😊

Spotify playlist once again did not disappoint as first two songs were Stand by Me Ben E King -lyrics while simple are very enjoyable and Avalon by Roxy Music - music is so upbeat

Samuel’s Coffee House - Summerside

Woke up this morning to some good news…Ron is going to give it a go today to Portage WP! Hope it goes well…I know there will be some discomfort involved ie pain but if it’s manageable he will get there.

As part of our story swapping I told Ron about my Camino Portuguese experience and the Porto to Santiago de Compostela leg where shorter distances (20 km or so) got me there…he was listening intently.

Update - Received update email…Ron walked 32kms…first two hours in pain…took a bunch of Ibuprofen and finished. I wrote back “SLOW IT DOWN”…I expect he will keep up this pace…who knows I may see him again…that may well be his plan. 🥹

I also received a nice note from Hubert of La Petite France 🇫🇷 thanking me for “our discussions over your stay”. Nice gesture! I was planning yesterday to send Hubert and Michele a thank you note for the stay at their superb B&B and the thoughtfulness behind the packed continental breakfast…however I got sidetracked and did not do so 🥲. So I promptly took care of that today.

A little diversion for the day

Reflecting on honesty while walking…consider myself to be a fairly honest fellow…a straight shooter for the most part.

I can stretch a story quite well however most catch on quickly…Bluffing…I would be the world's worst poker player ever.

Silly example came to mind - couple of years ago…I purchased (well sort of🥲) a small amount of items at the grocery store…used the self checkout and went home. Then to my horror realized I HAD NOT PAID…stolen the goods! Quickly went back to the store with items in hand and went to the service desk…had to explain that x,y we’re not in the bag but in my fridge at home…so please add it to what I owe. Got an  interesting look 👀 maybe this doesn’t happen every day 😂

In my youth I received some interesting but conflicting direction. My Dad (Andre or Andy) and his buddy Joe would go every Friday to McDonalds for coffee. Stay for two hours…get free senior refills…solve world problems…Joe would swipe the Globe & Mail as he left “they don’t need that!”

Perhaps I will follow in Dad’s footsteps in years to come. I even know an Andy (who may be reading this) who might fit the bill for solving world problems as old codgers…

Dad would take my younger brother Marc and me walking down the train tracks behind our house. There were a couple of lumber yards around and a few times a “straggling” piece of wood 2x4 would be in the lumber yard but just out of reach.

Dad turned to Marc at least once “vas me chercher ça” and Marc either scrambled under or over the fence. We sort of knew it wasn’t right but somehow we bought “they don’t need that…they don’t even know they have it” 🤔

Oh my…a little honesty training that we had to overcome!

A highlight for the day was the receipt of two creations from Elodie 🥰

Tonight I am staying at The Home Place B&B which is a late 1800 vintage old house. Greg gave me a tour which was very interesting…clearly takes much deserved pride in what he and his wife (have not met yet) have done to the house.

I have once again been upgraded to the best room at no additional $…an advantage in non tourist season. When I asked Greg about laundromat services in Kensington he would have none of it and simply said “give me your wash…no problem we will do it” This is a good thing because when I Googled Kensington PEI laundromats this is what I
got…serious! 🤣

Greg then proceeded to ask what my plans were for supper…of course no plans…he highly recommended the Island Stone Pub…so
popular on Saturdays that he made a reservation for me…I have a bar stool waiting for me at 5:30.

Surgery performed on pesky heel blister…likely put a pad on tomorrow. Really don’t notice it much during the day…only when the shoe is removed.

Well that’s a wrap on a quiet day…tomorrow on to Cavendish…29 kms…should be warm and I plan on walking in shorts. Apparently the first 20kms or so are on the shoulder of a highway and the worst stretch of the entire Island Walk! Hmmm 🤔 think I have heard that before! I may not have a single photo!

Greg even offered to drive me 20kms to Bayview to skip the highway part…apparently he has done this for others. Oh my…at least I know what to expect…and when expectations are low sometimes one gets a nice surprise…why not? 😊

After tomorrow I understand the scenery improves quite a bit ☺️

I only have a few additional pictures…it was that kind of non descript day!

Enjoyable tree lined walk

Another field!

Ken I tried to take a straighter picture of a church 😊
