An absolutely beautiful walking day on the Confederation Trail 24C at 2:30pm light winds 20 kph.  Left late at 6:40am…walking well but kind of ambling along…no road walking 😊…27 km which without any elevation G/L is perfect.

Felt good…feet seemed to have settled down and simply accepted they must keep moving forward πŸ˜‚. Injury report… nothing new!

Needed to shake things up a bit as I think my 8h Spotify playlist has gone through an estimated 8 times already πŸ₯Ή So I moved to podcasts… briefly

 - Strong Sense of Place Couple pick a country or a theme…theme was Theatre and 5 books which have a focus on the theme are reviewed. Most interesting…learn a lot…great book tips.

- Daily NYTimes podcast on various topics…this episode was on AI and the current concerns about how quickly it has been developing and the risks associated with this. Fascinating and scary at the same time!

- What’s Your Problem - My favourite podcast where entrepreneurs who are breaking new ground in many endeavours are interviewed. So much to learn! This episode was on switching planes to hydrogen fuel cells from current jet fuel. Here is a link to this episode if interested in this type of podcast…you will not be disappointed!

Building a plane to save the world

Back to last night which will be one of the highlights of the Island Walk. People, food, adventures/misadventures and the odd dangerous animal encounter…that’s what I remember most about my long walks. Must see museums, churches etc while they can be interesting…tend to fade quickly in the background.

It’s quite late…almost comatose…7:30pm and I receive an email from George the owner who had already communicated with me a couple of times yesterday

 Hi Guy,

I just want to make sure you have checked in okay, and if you have any questions. I will be back in Mount Stewart around 8pm.”

Chain of responses summarized “All good…may be asleep by then πŸ˜‚”…”Ok won’t bother you …rest up”…”Just joking knock on the door”

Well I was sort of joking…almost 37kms…feet whining pathetically…but a little voice said “George has been super so far…meeting people like him is what this is all about”

George shows up…all smiles…before long he invites me downstairs to his restaurant for a beer and oysters.

A long chat ensued…George born in Taiwan moved to Canada in his teens. Has 3 kids 10, 12, 14
who will be moving to PEI in two weeks…his family have been coming to PEI for 5 years…love the area…bought Bao Shack (has 4 rooms) 3 years ago….have a restaurant where he serves Thai food once a week.

He and his brother in law Martin who lives in Vancouver, are now restoring a 100 year old house in Stanhope just down the way. George’s family lives in St. Catherine’s Ontario.

Interestingly George walked the Camino Frances from St. Jean Pied de Port to Santiago de Compostela in 2021…as soon as possible after COVID. The first night after walking the Napoleon route (Paulo that’s the route non Brazilians walk πŸ˜‚…little joke between us as Paulo walked the Valcarlos route as he was scared 😱 of fog!) George arrived at Roncesvalles to find out it was full. Every second bunk was empty due to COVID precautions.

So they had to walk 3 extra kms to Burguete πŸ₯²…very tough after a full day of climbing!

George wants to return to walk a Camino but only for a couple of weeks…debating between Camino Portuguese from Porto or Camino Primitivo. Having done both my vote is easy the Camino Primitivo is an amazing walk!

Very kind offer…thoroughly enjoyed myself…huge late night…in bed at 9:45pm 😱

Shucking oysters…amazing!

Thaï curry with beef, rice and potatoes 😊

The first 16kms were  pleasant walking…a few people were out and about the trail…

Cherry Hill my room

Bao Shack

27kms to go!

Beaver Dam

An interesting Discovery!

I came upon two huge fields on both sides of the trail with hundreds of these white boxes on the ground! Pinch photo to enlarge it to better see boxes!

???

Walking along the only thing that came to mind was that these were beehives…but why the weird setup like this?

A older fellow was walking towards me and I stopped and asked him if he knew anything about these boxes.

“Sure those fields you saw are blueberry fields and those boxes are beehives brought in to pollinate the fields. There is a large processing plant close to here”

So I asked him if someone collected honey from these hives?

“Well that’s what bees do…I think a local fellow picks the boxes up and likely gets honey from them”

I told him that I always see beehives stacked up not like this and he told me later in the season they are stacked up.πŸ€”

I knew that bringing in bees to fertilize crops is big business in areas like California so this makes sense. He didn’t seem as sure about the honey production part…so I did a very little research…

Cut and paste from PEI Google info.

“Bumblebees are becoming important workhorses among wild blueberry pollinators, helping P.E.I. to near record production levels in 2022. “

“While both (honeybees and bumblebees) produce honey, bumblebees do not produce a surplus of honey like honeybees. Therefore, beekeepers do not collect bumblebee honey for consumption.”

My conclusion is the boxes contain pollinating bees however the jury is out as to whether these are honeybees (honey) or bumblebees (no honey)…if I had to bet these are bumblebees (no honey)

Shortly thereafter arrived in Morell and WOW a Coop food store! Incredible…very few towns have such food stores on the Island Walk!

The last 12 kms to St. Peter’s were quite scenic…put the earbuds away and listened to the birds chirping away. Someday I will take a course or join a group to learn more about bird songs and recognizing birds…intrigued!

Very narrow bridge!

Staying at Points East Coastal Inn…a very nice place. Sarah and Rodger who run it bought the house a few months before COVID…then Hurricane Fiona hit! Rodger a contractor by trade says they spent $$$ renovating…all their own labour!

Tomorrow 7:00 am breakfast followed by 33 kms to New Zealand + 10kms all on the Confederation Trail!

Well unfortunately rain is back in the forecast (Charlottetown) in a big way…June 2 - 6 rain every day. Total expected 52 - 63 mm ugh 😩 Not much one can do! Packa and few photos likely…hope forecasters are wrong! Hope no mud roads πŸ™

Finally just a few other pictures from the day…

Huge white church in background

Ken does this church look crooked to you?

My best shot at a Selfie πŸ˜‚ I know beard looks terrible…glasses a little
cockeyed 😱 Overall a very bad look πŸ˜‚

Oh and this picture reminds me that the Clooney’s (sunglasses) have not been used during the day…so far not a big deal but now it’s sunny.

I use my phone a lot during the walk…photos, Wikiloc, Spotify etc AND no matter what brightness setting I use I cannot see my phone with the Clooney’s. Maybe it’s the tint of the Clooney’s?

PEI Island Walk - May 30, 2023 Day 14 Shaw’s Hotel (past Cavendish) to Mount Stewart

Daily Information

Distance:    36.7 Kms   [424.8 Kms]

Walking time:   7h 00m [78h 54m]

Doddling time:   30m  [8h 57m]

% Doddling time:  7.1% [10.2%]

Avg walking speed:   5.2 Kms/hr  [5.4 Kms/hr]

Elevation G/L meters: 50(51)  [1,228:(1,290)]

Total Daily Steps: 50,551 [648,460]

% of Walking Days Complete (24): 58.3%

% of Total Kms (estimate 703): 60.4%

% of Shuttle Rides (estimate 17): 70.6%

% Come on get a Wiggle on Days (>40 km): 57.1% [80.0%]

One significant positive change is the expected number of Come on get a Wiggle on Days >40 km has been reduced from 7 to 5 hence the 80.0% complete rate in red.

On June 2nd the walk to New Zealand (PEI πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦) is 23kms then an 8km shuttle to accommodation. June 3rd the walk was to be 46kms. I looked at the map and quickly concluded I would prefer to walk an extra 10km past NewZealand - total 33kms making June 3rd 36kms. Ran that by the accommodation provider who will be providing shuttle service and they readily agreed.

June 5th I can walk 36kms on trail and get a shuttle accommodation 7km off the trail. DONE!

Note: Yesterday’s Day 13 blog posting email indicated a short video…I don’t know why but MailChimp stripped it out when sending daily post. The video is 15 seconds long…of professional quality 😊 and really shows the power of the waves etc. If you go to Day 13 blog email and go to bottom click “read on” you will find it’s there. Turn up the volume to get full impact…I may be submitting it for Best Short Documentary film at next years Oscar’s.

Got off to 5:55 am start today and similar to yesterday very scenic first 10+ kms along the ocean and the rest walking 15 kms along a secondary highway which was surprisingly busy and the last 11km on the Confederation Trail.

Did my dishes before leaving!

All in all a good solid day but the feet are pretty cranky at the moment. Left foot heal blisters gone, toe blister is essentially gone but now simply a tender area.

Right foot got a little jealous of the attention given to the left so a new blister on small toe has appeared…will require some attention.

So much road walking leads to tired feet…pretty simple.

It was 3C this morning however it is 21C now…shedding layers all day however I made a rookie mistake and wore long pants instead of shorts πŸ₯². I was too warm overall…should have changed on the trail to shorts as no one is around (except for when bicycle group of 10 women who cycled past me πŸ˜‚). Legs can be cold to start…it’s the core that must be kept warm!!!

Spotify playlist was again great to start the day with Eye of the tiger by Survivor - nice beat to get moving and When tomorrow comes by Eurythmics - like the lyrics

Honesty comments followup to May 27th Day 11 blog posting Miscouche to Kensington.

Andy a potential old codger for future coffee (by then maybe I will be drinking coffee again πŸ€”) to solve world problems sent me the following reply πŸ˜‚

« It is called sticky fingers and what will only be thrown out anyways, so might as well take it home!! lol »

Also this morning I left Shaw’s Hotel without paying…seriously! I realized around 7pm last evening just before becoming comatose that I hadn’t paid…office was closed…remember no one was there yesterday when I arrived.

This hotel is essentially closed and I had no idea when someone might show up. Do not worry…I am honest…however I was NOT walking back to pay! I sent an email asking them to phone me to settle up. Hope this all works out because my conscience will not allow me to have stolen a nights accommodation.

Update: All settled 😊

Small Diversion

A few blogs ago I commented about various soaps etc in room and my bafflement about usage. Ok yesterday I had body soap and shampoo bottles. By MISTAKE I used body soap on my hair and shampoo on my body. How worried should I be over this grievous error?

Ron Update

Email from Ron this morning…

So, Guy you were right about pacing

When I pulled into the motel at Summerside yesterday my foot was a bloody mess. I’m taking the bus to C-town tomorrow and going home.
I have the summer to contemplate a return.
Happy trails

Ron

Unfortunate but not surprising…was fun talking to Ron however there is a leΓ§on there for me. If I want to keep doing long walks…or rather shorter long walks… I have to better respect what my body can now do…not what it did 10 years ago.

Some pictures from the first part of the walking day…again a real treat!

Walk on path to the right

Mountains of PEI πŸ˜‚

Richards Fish and Chips used to be here - all gone due to Hurricane Fiona

Bike/Walking Trail totally blocked by sand

Interesting comment

A woman cyclist passed me on the ocean walking trail “Good morning - not much to see around here!” WHAT this part of the walk is amazing! A little while later she is stopped with a massive camera taking some pictures. “Have you taken any good pictures?” I am asked.

Dunno about pictures - matter of perspective on whether ocean views, beaches etc are worth seeing πŸ€”

Unfortunate Incident

Kindness, caring, consideration for others - if you are striving for these whatever your station in life you are a Winner! However in my estimation the opposite is true if you are not!

Walking on Hwy 6…busy busy road…large black dog …call him/her Fluffy…comes charging towards me barking like crazy…woman is hanging clothes just watching Fluffy…I stand my ground…yell…bang trekking poles and dog stops maybe a couple of meters away and retreats…meanwhile I am now standing on highway watching traffic.

Fluffy returns aggressively two more times…the final time I screamed as loudly as I could! I was really pissed off!

Woman simply watches all this…at no time did she call Fluffy back, showed any concern, said sorry or even a trite “Oh Fluffy won’t bite”. Nothing at all…simply turned her back to me and went into the house.

Good thing I did not have a chance to express my feelings to her πŸ˜‰πŸ˜±

I am now comfortably setup in Bao Shack (actual name of place πŸ˜‚). Sunny tomorrow…shorts on…27 kms so not too bad. 4 of the last 10 days > 30 kms so the walk will remain challenging for sure!

Finally a few other pictures from the day…

Hurricane Fiona Damage Everywhere!

Waypoint 18

Field of dandelions - beautiful!

Which way do I go?

Biffy 3 - closed

So much for no more fries

PEI Island Walk - May 29, 2023 Day 13 Cavendish to Shaw’s HΓ΄tel past Cymbria

Daily Information

Distance:    33.4 Kms   [388.1 Kms]

Walking time:   6h 32m [71h 54m]

Doddling time:   42m  [8h 17m]

% Doddling time:  9.6% [10.3%]

Avg walking speed:   5.1 Kms/hr  [5.4 Kms/hr]

Elevation G/L meters: 129(153)  [1,178:(1,239)]

Total Daily Steps: 49,050 [597,909]

% of Walking Days Complete (24): 54.2%

% of Total Kms (estimate 703): 55.2%

% of Shuttle Rides (estimate 17): 70.6%

% Come on get a Wiggle on Days (>40 km): 57.1%

The main comment about stats today is that I thought I had a 25 km day and it was 33.4 kms. Holy that takes some mental adjustment while walking πŸ₯Ή

Got going at 6:30 am today after breakfast…see below. Man was it cool at 6C feels like 0C with wind 48 kms per hour…every layer on! Yesterday 29C!!!

Continental Breakfast

Overall the day was split in two parts Part 1 Cavendish to North Rustico 15kms which was glorious walking and then to Brackley Beach 18kms which was ok. It was again a quiet day with minor social interactions and one terrifying experience…more later.

First a morning scare looking at the 14 day forecast…I finish June 9th. LOOK at June 5 - 8…appr 100 mm in rain. Visions of the Camino Portuguese start where we had > 200 mm of rain first 3 days.

Upon arriving at my accommodation I took another peek…incredible change! Let’s hope the new forecast is right!

Packa Update

Once again Rachael my Packa mentor from New Zealand came to the rescue with a detailed analysis and perfect solution. I did think she may have stressed my overall ineptitude a little bit too much however I understand 😊 πŸ˜‚

Solution…apply duct tape I have with rounded corners to prevent peeling to the inside of the Packa! This way the image I am trying desperately to maintain is protected from a patch seen by passersby.

The repair job is complete…note there were two small tears.

I have a crazy urge to add a nose and mouth!

Spotify playlist had two favourites early Eye in the Sky by Alan Parsons Project and Albany by Roger Whittaker. Yes I enjoy Roger Whittaker! While I don’t understand a word of Albany as it’s in German…I have always enjoyed listening to it!

The walk to North Rustico can only be described through pictures…super nice walking trails…ocean waves crashing on the shore…I basically slowed to a crawl. I took a small video…15 seconds or so…to also provide perspective. Absolutely incredible walking…would do that again in a heartbeat!

A very short video

Terrifying Incident

It happened just past this barricade right by a small cliff leading to the ocean…

The wind was howling madly…I had taken my gloves off to take a picture…Tilley hat was strapped in…wind shifted it off my head onto my shoulders as has happened a number of times during the long walk and then 😱 the Tilley blew off my head!!!!! On the ground ready to meet it’s maker…

Have honestly been told a number of times that I have pretty good reflexes…whether I actually do or not…my right trekking pole flashed forward at lightning speed and stabbed the Tilley as it started to careen madly away πŸ˜…

Phew crises averted except in doing so my gloves fell on the ground and the left trekking pole stabbed one glove…somehow picked the two items and went running after the second glove.

Man that was so so close to disaster…I likely lose a pair of gloves every season due to inattention but to lose the Tilley would have been devastating.

However all ended well ☺️

Stopped at an Irving gas station for some food items…gas stations are the only way to buy food in many areas. Fellow says “you walking the Island Walk?” “Yup!” Other guy beside him says I walked a couple of days but couldn’t hack the road walking…ok…

When I told them I was on day 13 they were quite surprised as this is typical day 17.

Somehow Camino walking came up as the fellow who tried the Island Walk did the Camino Portuguese from Lisbon…not too shabby as that’s 600+ kms. He said he was dialling it down and hoped to do short Caminos like Finisterre or the English way. Was a fun little chat…hope he gets to walk a Camino path again!

After the long walk I ended up at my accommodation Shaw’s hotel…a rough start…no one is around! Finally a young guy shows up and completes the checkin…I think he is maintenance πŸ˜‚

There’s a sign saying breakfast 8am to 10am and a restaurant…sorry restaurant will only open in a week or so. Hmm 4 cookies…chocolate milk…3 Clif bars…2 small sandwiches. I have not eaten since breakfast and do not expect to be able to buy anything tomorrow during the day.

Oh well I will survive…

Meanwhile I am told I am in cottage 18… this has to be an upgrade as I thought l simply had a room in the Inn part. My home for the night…sleeps 8 with pull out sofa bed…but a little short of food!

While admiring the digs…a knock at the door…enter young guy saying….”the owner came up with this to help you out” How good is that!!!

Tomorrow on to Mount Stewart where George awaits (another email today)…he reminds me of Greg back from Day 11 in Kensington who was so very considerate and so very proud of his old historic home! 35 kms I think πŸ€” scenic early again…should warm up a touch.

To finalize a few additional pictures from a very good day!

Sculptures along North Rustico boardwalk

Great blue heron

Shipbuilding

Acadiens

Mi’kmaq

I have always considered memorials associated with planted trees or park benches to be very touching…they speak to something the deceased person loved to do. On the boardwalk in North Rustico they had numerous lamp posts with memorial plaques…great idea!

Can’t Afford!

Hurricane Fiona?
