Crushed it on a perfect weather day…no rain, some wind and cool. A blend of forest, farmers fields and road walking…we knew this would be a long day and both of us were walking very well.

At 5.2 kms pace that was our best day so far…elevation gains/losses were minimal which allowed this. For some this would be boring day..for me I love this kind of walking day. You know what you have to do…keep it simple and enjoy being outdoors for 8+hours.

In my PEI blogposts I referred to this kind of day as a Come on get a wiggle on it day…defined as

Absolutely no goofing around walking...pretend I don’t notice people as I pass (really not nice)...army type focus (as if I know what that would be like 🤣)...no ice cream...grabbing berries off trees on the run without stopping.

We did stop for lunch 😊

Back to last night where we completed our Italian food day!

Tortellini

Shout out to Willance House in Richmond

Last night we stayed at the Willance House in Richmond. An absolutely fabulous stay…10+++ rating! We were initially greeted at the door by Colin at 1:30 who explained to us that our room would be ready at 2:30…asking if we would like laundry done when we return! Absolutely 👍

Upon our return Colin:

- took us to storage area for trekking poles and boots

- came upstairs to our room and started to explain everything such as:

   - how the shower works woohoo 🎉

   - breakfast as early as 7:00 considering our big day tomorrow

   - had a prepared breakfast menu with easy to read options…please have that down by 5:00pm to facilitate an early breakfast!

- wifi and password card

- showed us how the door locks and unlocks

- bathroom has two hooks…well blow me down two people are showering! Most places have one hook…why?

 - laundry!!! Wow 🤩 for 8GBP (can’t figure out how to get the pound sterling symbol 🤔) we were given a large plastic bag and could have 20 laundry items…a pair of socks counts as 1! Amazing we easily found 10 each.😂. Later in the evening the laundry was at our door…have a look! Oh and a note that two pairs of pants would be there the next morning…and there they were at 6am just out the door. Sandra a huge thank you! 😊

Folded! Never could I do this!

And there they were beautifully folded!

I felt like we were the most important guests here..fantastic! Yet I know there were many others but just like with my Maman I knew she always liked me best…sorry Marc and Pauline 😂

Curious as to why Lake District rainfall is so high? - answer

Why does it rain so much in the Lake District? The prevailing westerly winds cross the Atlantic Ocean picking up large amounts of moisture. The air hits the Lake District hills and is forced to rise where it cools and the moisture condenses to form rain. This is called relief or orographic rainfall.

Injury Report

Maybe 6 months ago I saw the Foot Guy for a corn removal. He charges a flat rate per half hour and asked if I wanted my toenails cut. Hmmm 🤔 never had that done…why not? Well there and then decided given the terrible job I do I will have my toe nails cut going forward…no toe nail colour polish though 😂.

Now kind of wondering if he will accept me as a client next time…yikes the feet and toenails look a little/quite a lot worse for wear! No blisters though 😊

Upper right arm has a deep bruise as on day 4 one of my tumbles was directly on a rock…ouch. Since then having some trouble lifting my arm too high however today big improvements!

Back decided to go a little wonky a few days ago…Advil, Robax and mobility exercises helped. However Greg last night suggested lightening my carry load and adjusting the shoulder straps to ensure the backpack sits on top of my hips.

Honestly I know I have hips…roughly know where they are… well kind of know…however telling me “sit on top of my hips” baffles me. Well what a difference this made today in walking!

All other scrapes etc due to multiple tumbles are good!

Breakfast this morning was superb…went with an omelette for a change.

Fruit was fantastic!

Packed lunch

We officially met Ben and Jason two UK walkers with whom we have chatted briefly with over the past few days. These guys are strong…they also combined our Day 3 and 4 into one which is incredible. However at lunch time Ben seemed to be favouring a knee and had KT tape every which way…believe this is a physio approach to stabilize muscles/ligaments?

We also said our goodbyes to Allison and Lonnie from Victoria BC who were only walking half way to our stop. Turns out they are 65, 66 respectively so well done fellow Canadians.

As we were leaving Richmond a couple and then an elderly fellow stopped and helped us to stay on track. It was a little tricky even with GPS…we find that people are more than willing and generous with their time. Maybe it has something to do why my “Sheepish I’m lost look” 😂

On the trail we met Mark several times who was walking like a pinball 😂…off yonder… no wrong way…hops a fence with barbed wire not too gracefully…walks ahead then notices he lost his earbuds on one side so goes back to where he hopped the fence and finds it. Then off Mark goes and gets ahead of us at lunchtime taking a totally different route. Fun to talk to for sure!

Someone along the way had a wicked sense of humour or he hadn’t been very kind to his partner…

Arrived at Ingleby House Farm around 4:00…we have our own little cottage. This was waiting for us…😊

Scones…delicious!

Two rather difficult crossings today…

Major highway 3 lanes each way with divider in middle. This was not fun as we had to be super careful!!!

Tomorrow we have a short 20 km day with decent elevation gains/losses. After that 2 more 30 km days and we toss our stones in the North Sea! Fingers crossed 🤞

Finally some pictures from the day…it will be readily clear that the landscape isn’t like the Lakes District…that’s perfectly fine. Long walks always have this mixture.,,

Ok where is the bull? 😰

That was fun 🥹

Was this sign commissioned?

  2. Agreed! Heard a couple yesterday who were going to skip a section as surroundings were too “dull”…similar to the Meseta discussion on Camino Frances!
