A gentle walk in the beautiful Swaledale Valley on the low route. Sure some ups and downs…rain in the second half however this walk was an easy one. One foot in front of the other simply concentrating on the incredible landscape without focusing too much on where one is stepping!

I do not understand why they rate the Wainwright Coast to Coast walk as the second most difficult walk in the UK. I mean really..easy peasy! Hmmm..I do have a tendency to forget events that are not favourable…could that possibly be happening again? 😂

One scary moment…other than that a very quiet day!

Last night at the Keld Lodge had a great supper and sat next to Dave and Dawn from the UK 🇬🇧 and chatted a bit. They also did not complete day 3 Ennerdale Bridge to Grasmere and really seemed…without saying so…to think we were a little too adventurous for having done so!

Fish pie…delicious!

Breakfast was once again delicious!

Especially like the fried toast!

Ok so here are two food items I am having trouble with…and I am not a fussy eater!

- English tea…20 years ago stopped drinking coffee and switched to herbal tea. English tea makes me think of my mom’s Red Rose tea. It’s terrible however I am now at a point where I can drink a cup.

- Porridge…it’s been offered however I doubt it tastes like those Quaker Oats packages with brown sugar mixed in that I had as a kid. So far I have not even tried…it does not look too appetizing. Maybe I am missing something great?

A couple of English guys with whom we crossed paths with over the days…but somehow never made introductions 😪… were leaving today. Last night I mentioned to them that earlier that day they somehow got ahead of us…without them passing us at any time. Asked if they were the fellows we saw sneak out of taxi. One of them cracked a smile and didn’t miss a beat “Oh no you caught on to our game! We do that all the time!” A little offbeat humour can go a long way 😂

Returned to the HOKA Speedgoats …other trail shoes really served their purpose protecting injured toes over past few days.

Mud anyone?

As we left the Keld Lodge Greg did his selfie picture of the two of us…

Still smiling…Greg “what did Guy get me into?”

Shortly after leaving we met Taito the young Japanese fellow who has been in Europe walking various trails since February. We had previously met him on our long day to Shap.

We walked with Taito for the rest of the day…very enjoyable learning about Japan and what he has been doing in Europe. Likewise he was equally interested in Canada.

He has walked in Norway and the 3 week Kungsleden trail in Sweden…carrying his food, tent etc totalling 15kg!!! This is a world class hike…one which I will not do in this lifetime!

Like all Japanese people Taito is very polite and respectful…he holds gates open for us! Hopefully we will meet again as his plan is also to walk into Robin Hoods Bay on Sep 29th. We exchanged email addresses…hope to keep in touch.

Taito

Now in the afternoon it was one of those rain on/off type of days. Raincoat on then take it off and return to the backpack…rinse and repeat etc. On one of the “returns” I got lazy and simply stuffed it under
my backpack cover…you know the one that flies away every so often. As I cleared one of the many openings, gates, stiles between fields I hear Taito yelling “Guy…Guy”

Thankfully I am so slim…geez!

Taito was holding in his hand my backpack cover AND inside my fancy rain jacket! Holy moly I would have lost them both! 😏

So I started thinking 🤔…why doesn’t someone invent rain gear which combines the backpack rain cover and the rain coat? Maybe you cinch a pocket over the backpack AND have a rain poncho with hood, zipper and arms tucked into the cover when not needed. When needed reach back…pull stuff out and voila you have rain protection.

Also in rain on/off days…which happen frequently one could walk with arms out of the poncho. Brilliant! I wonder if I have something somewhere that I could reunite with tomorrow…everything deserves a second or more chance 😊

A few British signs seen today…

Tomorrow on to Richmond…another short day where I hope to buy something for the granddaughters and grandson! So far nada! Finally a few pictures from the day…

War memorials always are so meaningful
