Camino Norte - October 9, 2025 Day 5 La Caridad to Ribadeo

Daily Information

Distance:   24.1 Kms

Elevation G/L meters: 222:(249)

Similar to yesterday this was a very quiet pleasant day however shorter and much easier from an elevation Gain/Loss. 24.1 kms and we were in Ribadao.

The Strava view…so cool!

Strava link - Day 5

The highlight of the day was clearly the view entering Tapia de Casariego…it was as stunning as anything I have seen. A few pictures however I am well aware that my photography skills are limited…amazing views!

On the injury front…touch wood…I am walking well with nothing out of ordinary on the injury front. Paulo foot issue is still present…today was a little less painful I understand.

One incident wasn’t so nice more later 😡

Back to last night we were really tired and had supper at the earliest possible time 8:00…geez it’s almost bedtime however it was worth staying up so late 😋

The day got off to a very weird start…we both sat straight up and said “OMG it’s 7:30!!!”  I cannot remember the last time I woke up so late either on a Camino or at home. So far I am waking up much too early…maybe 3:30 or 4:00 and done for the night! I don’t want to have to walk 33kms each day to sleep well 😴!

Anyway we hustled a bit and were out the door off to get something for breakfast. A little embarrassing as we were walking in the opposite direction to pilgrim walkers heading off for the day. I did my best to convey the look “have a great day…we will eat breakfast and catch up later” Of course the catching up part never happened 🤣

Breakfast was a paltry croissant with jam…not the best start! Sincere apologies as I forgot to get a picture of our actual croissant so assume this is what I ate…

On the pilgrim walker side a quiet day again…our early days pilgrims are now spread out. The 3 young Americans are likely a week in front of us…some are likely in Ribadeo which is a sizeable place and for sure some are behind us. That is the way of the Camino…and magically we will undoubtedly meet some in Santiago de Compostela which is always a treat as we will meet as old time friends! No Mr KIA is ???

I will try and send Andrew from Toronto a WhatsApp message tonight to see how he is doing…a few days ago he appeared to have a physical issue. Hope all is ok.

Bob from the US (Irun start) - he seemed well informed about Canada

Alex from Germany

Jorge from Colombia (Soto de Luina) - had a brief conversation with Jorge who was with a group of 5 from Columbia. He did mention that his group was struggling with the physical demands of the Camino Norte “we were not prepared”

Sonia from France (Brittany) whom we met at breakfast time a day or so ago. Sonia stopped for a very quick chat as she was moving at warp speed to “go for a swim” at one of the many playas along the coastal route which is really scenic.

Route finding

I am finding the Camino Norte in general to be more challenging then most other Camino routes walked. The number of pilgrim walkers are somewhat lower…the number of variants much higher and the signage while ok is well simply ok.

I have Gronze Maps open which has been a very useful app. I had downloaded a set of Wikiloc tracks from let’s call him Mr. Highway which are virtually useless. This fellow simply likes to walk rather than drive or take a bus…as they would all follow basically the same roads. To heck with these superb forest paths or quiet country roads that the Camino Norte offers in abundance.

The day’s Issue

A day or so ago I wrote a piece about Paulo separating a two beds pit together as a king bed and asking for sheets. At the time it was funny now well…not so much.

I know problems with accommodation providers happen to everyone.

I see no point in going into details here suffice to say we were charged a modest penalty which was totally not warranted. An official great appeal from Paulo which included reference to article 9.3 of the Spanish Constitution was rejected with multiple falsehoods.

Left an extremely poor taste and various poor ratings on Gronze, Booking.comm and likely Google will follow.

That’s it…do not want this negative experience to impact the long walk.

Tomorrow on to Lourenza some 27.5kms away with ~750 up & down meters. Should be a bit more than a walk in park.

A few pictures  from a nice day 😊

Abandoned Church again

Tomorrow Galicia!!! Pulpo!
